When the Wolf Comes Home

Nat Cassidy

Nat Cassidy's horror novel When the Wolf Comes Home turns a five-year-old's nightmares into a citywide bloodbath: a washed-up actress and a runaway boy sprint through Los Angeles ahead of a father who isn't human anymore, told in chapters built for one more page.

From the review

Chapters here rarely run past five pages, which turns out to be the whole strategy. Nat Cassidy builds When the Wolf Comes Home like a chase on foot: no scenic detours, no chapter where anyone gets to sit down and process what just happened. A struggling actress finds a runaway five-year-old hiding in her bushes. Gentle lasts about a page. Then the boy's father shows up looking for him, the encounter turns violently wrong, and Jess and the boy are running before the book has properly introduced itself. What makes the chase worth following is the mechanism underneath it. The boy's fear can bleed into the world and become real, so every dread a five-year-old has ever had is a live threat, not a metaphor for one. That's a nasty idea, and Cassidy plays it fair: the rules get set early and never bent for convenience later. Most of the tension comes not from where the next attack is coming from but from what shape it will take, and that uncertainty does more work than the body count, though the body count is not shy either.
