The Review

Our take

After a multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021, Christina Applegate spent long stretches in a king-sized bed with memories she would happily have left alone. You with the Sad Eyes is where those memories end up, alongside the diaries she kept for most of her life. She had worked since childhood, first because the family needed money and then because a set was a better place to be than home, and this memoir asks what that arrangement cost her.

The argument, put plainly: the woman audiences knew from Married...with Children, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, Anchorman and Dead to Me was a working professional long before she was a person anyone checked in on. The diaries are the evidence, and they're good evidence. Applegate quotes them often, and the entries from her adolescence give her Laurel Canyon childhood a texture that hindsight rarely produces, and they let the reader watch a kid work out a home life that was coming apart. The home she was escaping was unstable. Her mother fought addiction, and abuse is part of the record. Self-doubt and body dysmorphia then rode along with her rise. The sharpest idea in the book is the split between the famous Christina Applegate and Kiki, the name her close friends use. Much of the memoir is her working out how far apart those two people were, and which of them the audience was actually getting on screen.

Does the evidence hold up? Mostly, with a structural complaint. The book doesn't run in a straight line. Applegate moves between periods by theme, which suits a project built on diary entries but can leave you unsure of the year. Certain feelings come back more than once, and a few contradict each other. Her view of her mother points in more than one direction, and she doesn't tidy it. I read that as honest. A memoirist who resolved every contradiction would be editing, and this book is trying not to. The later chapters are thinner. Once the sitcom years are behind her, the narrative hops between episodes faster and builds less.

The hard material is handled head on. She writes about abuse, including a violent relationship in her adult life where she keeps the man unnamed, and she writes about living with MS and about her love for her daughter. Neither is played for pity. The voice is funny, angry and very profane, with the swearing landing wherever she's feeling the most. Some stretches are heavy going, and the humor is what keeps them readable. She is a good writer, and the jokes sit alongside the grief instead of rescuing her from it, which is why the book never turns into a plea for sympathy. Anyone who knows her podcast MeSsy will recognize the register, though a good share of the material is new. She also narrates the audiobook herself.

Why you should read

Celebrity memoirs that skip the polish
Fans of Married...with Children and Anchorman
Listeners of her MeSsy podcast
Readers curious about growing up in Hollywood
Frank accounts of living with MS

What to expect

Diary excerpts woven through the story
Jumps between periods instead of a straight timeline
Heavy profanity and dark humor
Painful passages about abuse and a damaging family
A faster, thinner back half

At 296 pages it's short enough to read as one long, unguarded conversation. Applegate says she wanted a reader to feel less alone, and she goes about it by handing over her own unflattering record. She spent a career being watched. Here she gets to say what the cameras missed.
