Our take

Ulises Linares makes his living out of a mailbox, writing to lonely women who can't tell a love letter from a loan application. He's handsome enough that it's worked for years, and vain enough to know the shelf life on that is short. So he arrives in the small, humid town of Puerco Ahogado with a plan already half-built: charm the boardinghouse owner, marry her, empty her accounts, disappear. What he doesn't plan for is Inés, the niece who runs the house in every way but name and wants out of it badly enough to help him rob her own aunt.

Moreno-Garcia has always been good at making a house feel like it's keeping score, and this one does exactly that. Rooms that used to hold a wealthier family now hold resentment instead, and every meal, every visit from a nosy neighbor, every locked door carries the weight of what the family used to be before the Revolution and a fever season took it from them. Perla, the supposed mark, is written with more architecture than either of the younger schemers realizes. She's not the sad spinster Ulises has sized her up as, and the novel takes real pleasure in letting the reader see that before he does.

What keeps this from being a straightforward heist plot is how honestly petty everyone's motives are allowed to be. Nobody here wants a fortune to do anything noble with it. Inés wants a train ticket out of a life of fetching and scrubbing. Ulises wants to stop aging out of his own con. Even the town's manners are a kind of grift, all that starched courtesy hiding people who'd sell each other out over a rumor. It runs on a bleaker engine than most historical fiction bothers with, and that's the source of its heat: you're never rooting for anyone to win exactly, just watching to see who blinks first.

The romance that grows in the cracks of the scheme is the trickiest thing Moreno-Garcia pulls off, because Ulises genuinely doesn't believe in it and Inés has better reasons than most to distrust a handsome liar. Their scenes together have the charge of two people negotiating a truce neither one trusts, which is far more interesting than a clean seduction would have been. The plotting tightens hard in the back third, and a couple of the late reveals land with more velocity than the slow-cooked first half prepares you for. Puerco Ahogado is a town built on manners, and by the last page manners are the one thing nobody in it has left.
