Our take

The premise sounds like a joke and then keeps declining to be one. Aliens flatten every man-made structure on Earth in a single afternoon, the survivors funnel underground into a dungeon that runs on video-game logic, and the whole atrocity is broadcast across the galaxy as light entertainment. Carl goes in wearing boxer shorts, because that is what he happened to have on. His companion is his ex-girlfriend's Persian show cat. Within fifty pages the cat can talk, has extremely strong opinions, and is a better negotiator than he is.

What Dinniman understands, and what a lot of dungeon fiction misses entirely, is that a rule only matters when it costs something. The system hands out gear and abilities constantly, and nearly every one of them arrives with a hook buried in it. Accept a sponsorship and you now owe an audience. Lock in a class and you have quietly narrowed the range of things you can survive. There is a moment where Carl works out that the announcer's cheerful patter is itself a mechanic, that being entertaining is literally what keeps a crawler alive, and the floor drops out of the entire book. All at once those goofy stat screens are a description of exploitation.

It is also very funny. Out loud funny, in a register that swings from slapstick to grim without signalling the turn. Princess Donut is one of the great comic creations in recent fantasy, a vain feline who levels into something closer to a warlord and never once stops behaving like a cat. Dinniman keeps undercutting the comedy with real weight, though. The casualty figures are enormous. The crawlers who don't make it get names first. Carl's competence reads exactly like the competence of a man processing horror by refusing to stop moving.

If you have never read litRPG, be ready for stat blocks, loot descriptions, and achievement notifications sitting right inside the prose. Dinniman writes them tighter than most and uses them for jokes as often as bookkeeping, but they are there and they are part of the deal. What surprised me is how much architecture sits underneath. Eighteen floors, each with its own governing rules, each escalating what the last one established, and an intelligence running the show whose motives get colder the more of them you learn. I opened it expecting a gag. I closed it drawing a map.
