Our take

Kyrene doesn't get room to grieve before the world demands payment for it. She hunts for coin under a sky that never sees daylight, ten years into a war between humans and vampires, carrying a sword blessed by a goddess of justice she's stopped trusting to actually be just. Then she does something unforgivable in the worst hour of her life, and overnight she's the target: mortals want her dead, gods want her erased, and her own hunger for one more act of vengeance keeps putting her back in both of their paths.

Her way out is Septimus, the vampire prince she should hate and mostly does, who offers her a deal instead of a death sentence: work together and hunt the gods themselves. It's the enemies-forced-into-partnership setup romantasy readers show up for, and Broadbent commits to it fully. Septimus is all calculation and silver tongue, someone you don't trust even after he's saved your life twice, and the plot layers prophecy and curse over the hunt without turning into filler between the two leads.

The chemistry is the real engine, and Broadbent lets it build slow: verbal sparring first, grudging respect next, then a scene about two-thirds in, small on paper and enormous underneath it, where Kyrene stops performing indifference and Septimus stops performing control. That's the beat the whole book has been walking toward, and it lands without either of them saying the obvious thing out loud. When the story turns physical, it's explicit and unhurried, blood and danger folded into the desire in a way that fits two people whose survival and want have been tangled together since the first chapter.

This is the fifth Crowns of Nyaxia book, but it's also the first half of a new duet, and it holds up reasonably well as an entry point: Broadbent recaps enough world history and god-lore that a newcomer won't be lost on the plot mechanics. What a first-timer will miss is the accumulated weight of watching this world's earlier couples reach their endings, which makes a few of the prophecy reveals land more like exposition than payoff. Kyrene herself takes some getting used to: she's reckless and prickly for a solid stretch before her reasons click into focus. Septimus never asks for that patience. He's magnetic from his first scene on the page, calculating in a way that keeps you guessing right up until the moment he isn't, and he's reason enough on his own to want book six.
