Our take

The house does a surprising amount of the work here. Carlton drops Adeline into her dead grandmother's mansion outside Seattle, all long hallways and locked rooms and a rose garden nobody planted this season, and then makes you feel watched inside it. Doors that were shut are open. Objects relocate themselves. There's a legitimate haunted-house novel running underneath the romance, complete with a great-grandmother's journals that turn out to be a second, older account of the same kind of pursuit. That braid is cleverer than the packaging suggests.

Now the part that needs saying plainly, because getting coy about it would do you no favors. This is dark romance and Carlton takes the stalker premise all the way down. Zade Meadows breaks into Adeline's home, tracks her movements, and puts hands on her without asking first. Several scenes are explicitly non-consensual and are written to arouse rather than to horrify. Carlton flags this herself and points readers toward a content list, which is the correct call. It is the engine of the book, not an accident inside it.

What makes it land for the readers it lands for is that Adeline is never passive. She is furious. She is very funny about being furious. She hunts him back, and the passages where she flips the dynamic and leaves him the off-balance one are easily the strongest writing in the novel. There's a stretch in a hotel where she provokes him deliberately and you can feel control sliding sideways between them; that's the beat everyone comes out talking about. The heat is explicit, frequent and unembarrassed. Carlton never fades to black.

Zade's other life, the vigilante work he does against traffickers, pulls double duty: it gives him a moral floor to stand on and gives the plot somewhere to be. It is also the roughest material in the book. The prose loosens in those chapters, the villains stay thin, and you can feel a writer reaching for a thriller toolkit she hasn't finished assembling. Readers say this constantly and they are right about it. The romance is confident. The crime plot is still learning.

What lingers longest, once the shock scenes have receded, is the house and the journals and the idea Carlton keeps circling back to: that being wanted this completely feels, from the inside, a great deal like being hunted.
