The Review

Our take

Someone leaves a note on the body at the top of the villa steps in the Italian hills, signed, all but daring whoever finds it to come looking. That's the opening move of We Chase Shadows, and it's a good one. Not a killer hiding, but one performing confidence. The rest of the book tests whether that confidence holds.

Back are Amy, Steve, and Rosie, the We Solve Murders trio, now running an actual agency instead of talking their way into cases. This is their first proper job as a team, which puts a different pressure on the group than the first book did. Steve, a retired copper, works instinct and patience. Amy, a personal protection specialist, works nerve. Rosie, a bestselling novelist bankrolling the whole operation, works chaos and a checkbook. Their client wants the note's author identified, fast, and wants the police kept well away from it. Naturally, the agency takes the job anyway.

The case runs from that Italian villa to Barcelona, to Palm Springs, and back to the pub in Steve's home village, and the suspect list grows faster than the travel budget. A wanted Swedish criminal. An ex-wife with her own agenda. A business rival with motive to spare. Osman keeps the tone light even as the danger stops staying at a professional distance and starts finding its way toward the trio's actual lives. The globe-hopping is where the book asks the most patience. Threads pile up city by city, and readers who like their clues laid out in one drawing room may find themselves flipping back to remember who did what where. Readers expecting the tight, single-village charm of Osman's most famous series won't find it here; this one is broader and brasher, built for momentum rather than cottage warmth. It's a fair trade for the pace it buys, but it is a trade.

The pull for readers of this series was never only the puzzle. It's watching Amy, Steve, and Rosie needle each other while doing genuinely dangerous work, and We Chase Shadows spends real time filling in where they came from and how they ended up trusting each other. Steve's small English village, complete with his regular pub, keeps pulling the story back home no matter how far the case wanders, and that tether matters. It's the one location the villain can't touch without it costing something personal. Osman treats his cast's history as material worth developing, not just color between crime scenes.

Why you should read

Returning fans of the We Solve Murders series
Readers who want humor alongside genuine danger
Mystery fans willing to track several suspects at once
Anyone who reads mysteries for the characters as much as the case

What to expect

A globe-trotting case spanning Italy, Spain, and California
Dry humor threaded through real physical danger
A crowded suspect list that takes some tracking
A home village pub as base between chases

What holds it together is the same thing that held the first book together. These three actually like each other, and Osman lets that affection carry scenes that would sag in less careful hands. The humor never undercuts the stakes; it makes the stakes easier to sit with, right up until the story reminds you they're real. By the time the chase through Italy, Barcelona, and Palm Springs doubles back toward home, it's the trio you'll want more of, and Osman clearly knows it.
