Our take

Patrick Radden Keefe opens London Falling with a security camera, not a body. Footage from outside MI6 headquarters catches a young man pacing a balcony at two in the morning, back and forth, like he's rehearsing something. Then he isn't there anymore. The Thames does the rest of the work. Three days pass before his mother learns why he never came home; the doorbell that finally answers the question belongs to two uniformed officers, not her son.

That's the whole case, on paper. Nineteen-year-old Zac Brettler drowns, and the coroner's finding is suicide. Everyone else in the book disagrees, starting with his parents. What Keefe builds from that gap, between the official answer and a family's refusal to accept it, is a true-crime investigation with no villain waiting at the end to be unmasked. Just doubt, patiently accumulated, chapter by chapter. The book runs less like a thriller building to one big reveal and more like a family's case file, growing thicker with every chapter, refusing to close.

The doubt gets its fuel from Zac himself, who turns out not to be the person his mother thought she was worried about. For months he'd been running a second identity: the fictional son of a Russian oligarch, heir to a fortune that existed only in conversation, deployed on real people who had every reason to want a piece of it. He rents cars he can't afford, checks into hotels that assume money he doesn't have, and lets the story do the paying for him, at least for a while. Keefe reconstructs the con in fragments, the way the Brettlers themselves must have, one recovered text and one reluctant witness at a time, watching a teenager build a lie he didn't have the tools to survive. A slippery fixer named Akbar Shamji gets pulled into the orbit. So does a gangster who goes by Indian Dave, a nickname no publicist would risk inventing because nobody would believe it. Every associate who later talks to Keefe admits some version of the same thing: nobody checked, because in this circle checking is considered rude.

The book loses a step in its middle third, when Keefe widens the lens from Zac to the city that produced him: decades of foreign money, empty mansions bought as vaults, fortunes laundered through a Mayfair postcode. Tower blocks along the river sit dark most nights, owned by shell companies nobody can trace to an actual person, and the parties that do happen run on cash nobody wants to name out loud. The reporting is real and it matters, but for a stretch it arrives as argument rather than scene, and the momentum that carried the opening chapters goes slack while London's financial history gets its due. The case waits at the door.

Setup honored, not cheated. Keefe refuses to manufacture a certainty the record doesn't support, and the book is stronger for holding its nerve. The last image is a kitchen table still covered in printouts and phone records nobody has stopped reading, long after the official file closed.
