Wolf Worm Audiobook by T. Kingfisher— narrated by Mary Robinette Kowal

9 hr 14 min

Wolf Worm, T. Kingfisher's gothic horror novel set in 1899 North Carolina, sends a scientific illustrator into a reclusive entomologist's manor and straight into a body-horror nightmare built from mutated insects, missing predecessors, and whispered talk of blood thieves in the woods.

Why the audiobook wins

Insects are the whole engine of Wolf Worm's horror, and Mary Robinette Kowal narrates them with the flat, careful patience of someone describing specimens. That restraint is the point. When the entomologist's manor starts producing things that should not be able to move the way they move, Kowal never raises her voice, and a scientific illustrator calmly cataloguing a nightmare is far worse than screaming would be.

Gothic dread works differently in your ears. Nine hours of 1899 North Carolina, the woods, the talk of blood thieves, the predecessors nobody can account for, accumulate at the pace Kowal sets rather than the pace your eye skims. You cannot flick ahead to check whether the thing in the next room is what you think it is.

Kowal is a novelist herself, which shows in what she does with T. Kingfisher's sentences: she trusts the dry humor to land without pushing it, so the funny lines stay funny and the body horror stays clinical. One Audible credit covers the whole nine hours.
