Why the audiobook wins
Shakira Shute handles both halves of Bowen's setup — an Australian ghostwriter and a dying Scottish novelist's unfinished manuscript — and the accent contrast does structural work. When the ghostwriter starts reading the manuscript and realizing the murder in it happened, you can hear which layer you are in without being told.
Bowen writes historical mysteries with clean chapter ends and no wasted scenes, which suits commute listening. Eleven and a half hours is a week, and the Highland setting is the kind that benefits from being spoken rather than described.
