Stephen Graham Jones turns The Buffalo Hunter Hunter into a horror novel built from the actual bones of American history: a vampire who was once Blackfeet, a massacre that really happened, and a descendant transcribing the journal that ties them together. It's historical fiction with fangs, patient and vicious in equal measure.
Why the audiobook wins
Three narrators, and the framing device is why. Jones nests a 1912 Lutheran pastor's journal inside a present-day academic's discovery, inside a vampire's confession, and Shane Ghostkeeper, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teale each hold one layer. On the page you track the nesting by typography; in the ear you track it by voice, which is cleaner.
Ghostkeeper's reading of the Blackfeet vampire's account is the center of the book, and it carries the massacre history without turning it into a set piece. Fifteen and a half hours, and the horror is cumulative rather than jump-scare.
One Audible credit gets the full production, and this is the rare horror novel where the multi-voice edition genuinely clarifies the structure.
