Rebecca Yarros sends Violet Sorrengail off the map in Onyx Storm, the third Empyrean novel, trading Basgiath's war-college politics for an island-hopping hunt for allies. It's maximalist romantasy: dragons, brittle treaties, an ache between Violet and Xaden that has stopped being about whether they want each other, and a final act that goes off like a bomb.
Why the audiobook wins
Onyx Storm puts four narrators to work, and the third Empyrean book needs them. Rebecca Soler and Teddy Hamilton return as Violet and Xaden; Jasmin Walker and Justis Bolding widen the cast as the story leaves Basgiath and goes island-hopping after allies. The first two books were one place with one set of voices. This one is a map, and it sounds like a map.
Twenty-four hours is about a week of commuting, and Yarros builds it to be taken that way: brittle treaties, a found-family squad where nobody is guaranteed to make it, and an ache between Violet and Xaden that has stopped being a question of whether they want each other. The last act goes off like a bomb, and having it performed rather than read is the difference between watching that and standing in the room.
