Adrian Tchaikovsky's Green City Wars plays a joke premise dead straight: a raccoon private investigator working a noir mystery case in a solarpunk science fiction city where uplifted animals run everything humans don't want to touch. It sounds silly on the back cover. It reads like a real detective novel with real stakes.
Why the audiobook wins
John Pirhalla plays a raccoon private investigator completely straight, which is the only way this works. Tchaikovsky's joke is that the noir is real — the case, the corruption, the tired detective voice — and Pirhalla never signals that any of it is absurd, so the solarpunk city and its uplifted animal citizens land as a genuine setting rather than a gag.
The first-person detective narration is native to audio; hardboiled voiceover has been an aural form since the 1940s, and this leans into it. Just under thirteen hours, and the case structure gives it clean stopping points for a commute.
